My sample online dating profile is far from perfect.
I set a timer for myself yesterday morning so that I’d have adequate time to compose my thoughts without being obsessive and perfectionistic. I can always go in and revise, after all–once I get a little distance from the thing and see what kinds of responses I’m getting. I’m sharing it with you so that you can get a feel for the OKCupid template (if you are not familiar with it)–and so that you can see how the optional add-ons/lists round out the personal statement.
As for the photos I added, I made my main photo a simple, non-glamorous head-and-shoulders shot. Black-frame glasses, black-tshirt, brick wall background. I put in the jeans/leather-blazer photo you see on my About page. And one other shot of me sitting on a rock in Fort Tryon Park in NYC–a favorite spot right outside of the Cloisters museum. Just three photos. One mainly a head shot and two full-length in different settings. I think they show accurately what I look like–though I’m about 10 lbs. thinner at present, due to prolonged agonized breakup throughout holiday season. (Well, one good thing about prolonged breakups, right?)
For now, I’m just posting the complete profile without further commentary. In my next post, I’ll offer a few explanations of why I went about things the way I did–and I’ll also provide a little overview of the types of responses I”m getting.
Anyway, I never did exactly become a renegade spy. I settled on writing and journalism as a (marginally) less antisocial way to indulge curiosity. And I still reach for a little notebook I carry in my purse when I hear the couple arguing about TVs in the Best Buy…or hear the mom at the park explaining to her open-mouthed 5-year-old why “it’s just way too dangerous” to go on swings.
People are interesting, and I know how to shut up and pay attention. There’s no cure for curiosity, but that’s the closest I’ve found.

I’m Really Good At…

stringing words together.

The tangents I’m always going off on.
Books, Movies, Shows, Music, Food
Music: My tastes are eclectic and ever-changing, but hmm, I’m looking right now at the most recent stuff I’ve downloaded from iTunes, and the list includes Group Love, Delta Rae, Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Adele, and Amy Winehouse.
I’m an adventurous eater, inclined toward spicy Asian foods. I’ll try just about anything, long as it’s not deep-fried or slathered in buttercream.
The Six Things I Could Never Do Without
MacBook Pro (creativity engine and main work tool.)
One great pair of designer jeans. (Spent way too many years in mom jeans before discovering the life-changing denim choices at Saks.)
French roast coffee.
